Kerry's new message: Does it even matter?
Kerry's credibility has been savaged over the last 3 months. First, he faced $90 million in "flip flopper" ads. Next, the Swift Boat Liars suggested that he had lied about his Vietnam service. Finally, the Republicans used their convention to trash Kerry at every opportunity.
All of this takes a toll. Will the American public respond to Kerry's new message (that Bush is out of touch with reality) or will they even bother to listen?
I like what Kerry is saying - but I'm not sure it will help him. People are voting against him because they hate his personality. Ratcheting up his attacks will not help his personality numbers.
There is little that Kerry can do at this point except not screw up and hope that external factors continue to help keep Bush's poll numbers down.
Or maybe I'm wrong.
The funny thing about this election is that it has been billed as "the most important election of our generation", but we're stuck with two unpopular candidates to choose from. People can't really visualize how a Kerry presidency would be different from 4 more years of Bush. For one thing, Bush has coopted all of Kerry's Iraq proposals. Secondly, Kerry hasn't done a good job presenting a stark contrast between himself and Mr. Bush. Maybe Kerry's new message will help voters understand that Kerry would take the country in a different direction.
